When to use MD5

MD5 is a legacy 128-bit hash. It can help compare checksums when deliberate tampering is not a concern. Do not use it for password storage, digital signatures, certificates or security-sensitive integrity checks.

For new integrity checks, prefer SHA-256. For password storage, use a dedicated password-hashing method such as Argon2id, scrypt, bcrypt or PBKDF2.

Read the MD5 security considerations, NIST hash guidance and OWASP password storage guidance. MD2 and MD4 are also legacy hashes, not safer alternatives.
